Fela Davis (FOH sound engineer) on tour with Christian McBride uses Lewitt DTP Beat Kit Pro 7 // MTP 240 DM // MTP 440 DM // MTP 540 DM // MTP 840 DM // MTP 940 CM // LCT 240 // LCT 550
Fela Davis is a front of house and monitor engineer based out of New York City. She graduated from Full Sail University and has gathered over a decade of experience in live sound. Her past experience includes working for industry powerhouses Clair Global and House of Blues. While at Clair, Fela’s extensive knowledge of in-ear monitors and wireless microphones comes from prepping gear for network and cable television productions like the Good Morning America Summer Series, The Colbert Report and The Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade. And she also had the opportunity to mix with every major microphone used in live sound.
The list of award-winning artists for whom Fela has mixed front of house and monitors includes Arturo Sandoval, KRS One, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (member of A Tribe Called Quest), Chuck Mangione, and many more. And when she's not recording or mixing live shows for her company 23db Productions, she’s mixing front of house for the 3-time Grammy-winning jazz artist Christian McBride.
Fela on her mics:
“I love the Beat Kit Pro 7. My drums are super-present without any one drum overwhelming the rest of the mix. I love how the delicately rich tones of the kick, snare and toms cut through. There’s great separation between each drum – I can hear each individual tom. The LCT 340 pencil condenser mics sound amazing on the cymbals, and the 640 REX kick mic works with everything. I take it to my small and large gigs; it's my secret weapon. I like the fact that when people see me behind the board, they know it’s gonna sound right. I’ve used every brand of drum mic – and the Lewitts kill it: now that I’ve purchased the DTP Beat Kit Pro 7, I think the Lewitt drum mics just blow all the others out of the water. I've had several other engineers and random audience members pay me compliments on my drum sound. The DTP Beat Kit Pro 7 has been the best gear purchase I've ever made!"
Recently Fela had the opportunity to meet with our official distribution partner Tom Lee - founder of Tom Lee Music - and used some more LEWITT microphones right away live at Christian McBridges Big Band Concert in Macau. This is what she has sent us afterwards:
Tonight was an incredible show! Mr. Lee and his team took great care of me.
I had great mic combos with the LCT 550 on overheads, MTP 440s on horns and LCT 240s on the grand piano. Mr. Lee commented on how natural and present the mix sounded. Even the in-house engineer loved the drum and piano sound in the room.
The folks at Tom Lee Engineering got plenty of pics and video of rehearsal. They interviewed me as well as Melissa Walker our vocalist about the 940 CM. She used it for the first time today and loved the warmth immediately and the feel of it in her hand.
I fell in love with the LCT 240's on piano. They never took of in the monitors but still kept a natural sound. It's also not too heavy on a boom stand. In addition to the mics on the list I took a pair of these as well.
I'm looking forward to using these at the Tokyo Jazz Fest and mixing down this show when I get back to the states! You guys went above and beyond on this.
I appreciate getting this together for me at the last minute. It definitely sounded like Lewitt tonight!
