It controls the voltage fluctuations entering your appliances and saves them from serious damage. Stabilizers are static equipment used to stabilize your input voltage before sending it to the connected appliance. It senses the voltage fluctuations and either boosts or tames it to the required level before sending it to your appliance. Thus the stabilizer is a safety equipment between your appliance and power supply. It ensures trouble-free operations and optimizes the operating life of your appliance. Selecting a stabilizer is a critical matter. Important features you should look out for in a voltage stabilizer:

  • Mounting type. Stabilizers should be kept away from wet places and out of reach from children. Hence wall mounted stabilizers are recommended
  • Overload current protection. This feature turns off the stabilizer output in case of a short circuit or any kind of burn-out
  • Indicators displays. This is a handy feature that is usually included in all stabilizers. It indicates the fluctuating voltage or whether the voltage is sufficient enough
  • Time delay systems. In the event of a power cut this feature gives sufficient time to balance the current flow

Types of voltage stabilizers

The voltage stabilizers can be broadly categorized into three types. They are:

  • Relay type voltage stabilizers
  • Servo based voltage stabilizers
  • Static voltage stabilizers

Relay type auto voltage regulator has electronic circuit and relay to regulate voltages. Since there in no moving part in main operation of stabilizer while correcting voltage, it also a solid state type auto voltage regulator. Advantage of Relay type unit is that it has very low weight and low in cost. Disadvantage of relay type stabilizer is that, it is less durable and can not withstand high voltage surges. In some cases relay type voltage stabilizer get burn due to high voltage. 

Servo type auto voltage stabilizer consisting of servo motor, Buck Boost transformer (BBT), autotransformer. Output voltage of servo stabilizer is nothing but voltage across secondary of Buck Boost transformer. One end of primary of BBT connected to fixed tap of autotransformer and other end connected to shaft of servo motor. Whenever there is high or low voltage observed at input then servo motor moves across winding of autotransformer in such a way that voltage induced across secondary of BBT equals to set output voltage. Servo voltage stabilizers has rugged construction and can sustain high fluctuation and it is more durable.

Static voltage regulator as name suggest it consists of static circuit only. Voltage regulation is achieved with help of static semiconductor circuit without any moving past. Static auto voltage regulator can achieve correction in output voltage at much faster speed than servo stabilizer.
