Stage monitors

There are many monitors designed primarily for use in clubs, while others are designed for larger venues. The number of monitors needed is greatly influenced by the size of the stage and the number of performers. The most ideal option is to set up a monitor for each performer. Stage monitors are important because they allow you to listen to your own performance. In addition, monitors also help you and your bandmates stay in sync. They are designed to be installed on stage, within reach of vocalists and instrumentalists.

Types of stage monitors

There are two basic types of stage monitors: active and passive. The difference between them is quite simple. Active monitors have their own built-in power amplifier. If your main speakers are connected to a power amplifier and you have spare outputs, then it makes sense to use a passive monitor (without power) because you can just plug it in. On the other hand, if you need a monitor that can operate independently of other equipment, a powered model is a great option. Of course, the advantage of an active stage monitor is that everything is in one unit, but this means that a stage monitor will be heavier and more expensive than a passive one.

Form factors

Now you know the differences between powered and unpowered monitors, you still have to tackle a few more considerations. One of the most practical among these is the form factor that best suits your monitoring needs. There are several form factors of stage monitors:

  • Stage wedges
  • Side fill monitors
  • Stand mounted monitors

Stage wedge is a popular, low-profile design for monitoring. Stage wedges are a cabinet type that sits on the stage floor and is angled upward toward the performer without blocking the audience’s view. Among the most common monitor designs, the wedge is well suited for situations where each member of a group has a dedicated monitor. Ideally used as a complement to individual wedge monitors, side fills monitors sit just offstage and deliver a complete mix that the entire group can hear. As an alternative to the wedge-style monitor that sits on the floor, monitors can be stand mounted. These much smaller, unobtrusive monitor cabinets can be mounted on a mic stand and placed closer to the performer’s ear for better intelligibility and less overall sound pressure onstage. Keyboard/synth players might benefit from a stand-mounted monitor to better hear themselves cut through the mix.

The goal of a stage monitor is crisp, clear sound that will not distort at high volumes. Some monitors have separate amplifiers for the woofer and tweeter, giving you a full range of sound without the crackling distortion that often occurs when you boost it. Others may include an analog limiter and overload protection circuitry.
