Accessories for microphones

Mic accessories are often overlooked, yet their importance can't be overstated. There are numerous mic accessories designed to optimize your microphone’s performance. Some of them, including mic stands, cables, and mounts, are pretty much essential. Other items such as pop filters, windscreens, shockmounts, and isolation screens may also be critical, depending on how and where you are using your mic.

Stands

Microphone placement is a critical element in getting the best sound from your microphone. It is extremely important to have a microphone stand that is both extremely stable and easily adjustable. Unlike live mic stands which are engineered to be light weight and easy to move, studio mic stands tend to be heavier and have longer reach. In addition to providing extra stability, added mass makes mic stands less likely to be affected by floor-transmitted vibrations. The main types of microphone stands are:

  • Straight stands with tripod or round base
  • Boom stands
  • Low-profile stands
  • Desktop stands
  • Overhead stands

Straight microphone stands are available with a round base or with three folding legs. Stands with a round base are extremely strong, stable and difficult to tip over. Racks with three legs tend to work better on uneven surfaces, but you can easily trip over their legs. Boom stands has a lockable joint which connects the lower stand to the upper part, the so-called boom. Stands of this type can be easily adapted to different instruments and playing positions. Low-profile stands are used for microphones that are designed for bass drums or guitar amps. Overhead stands are needed to place the microphone over the drum set to capture the sound of the cymbals, as well as to give a more natural sound to the entire drum set. Desktop stands are especially popular in radio broadcasting, they can be quickly and securely placed within their operating range.

Cables

Sometimes even seasoned audio professionals don’t have enough quality mic cables on hand and have to reach for a budget cable, compromising the quality of their very expensive gear by using inferior interconnects. Microphone level signals are extremely low voltage. This makes them more susceptible to outside interference such as radio waves and electromagnetic fields. High-quality microphone cables offer benefits such as multiple layers of shielding, impurity-free copper, gold contacts, and quad conductors that help to reject noise and interference. Microphone cables have an XLR connector, but some mixers only offer TS or TRS 1/4" jacks, which require an adapter (XLR jack to 1/4" TRS plug).

Clips

The easiest way to attach a microphone to a stand is usually the included clip. Some popular mics use special clips that can be expensive to replace when they break. Jaw-style clips are another popular option. While they may not look as sleek and unobtrusive as fixed clips, they can adapt to various microphones and different diameters. Shock mounts are the preferred method for mounting microphones in the studio, and sometimes even on stage. This prevents the microphone from picking up low-frequency noise transmitted mechanically through the stand.

Pop filters

Pop filters usually consist of fabric stretched over a ring frame. Metal mesh pop filters are a newer development. They don’t stop the airflow, but deflect it so it doesn’t hit the microphone. Metal mesh pop filters are highly regarded for their transparent sound. Fabric pop filters are a time-tested design that provides good protection against blasting sounds. Whatever type of pop filter you choose, putting it between the singer and the microphone is a surefire way to solve problems during recording.

Windscreens

You’re probably familiar with the typical foam windscreens seen on reporter microphones. Many microphones are already protected by the design of their front grille. If this is the case, an additional foam cover offers only slight improvements. For outdoor recordings in film, TV and broadcasting, fur windscreens are a popular choice. Fur windscreens are more effective than foam covers. In rooms that aren't acoustically optimized, reflections can make the signal sound muddy. One possible remedy is a microphone screen. These are curved screens that are placed behind the microphone. They often include a microphone mount, the microphone and mic screen can be mounted on the same stand. While microphone screens can work very well, they’re no replacement for an acoustically treated room.
