Prodipe SB21

A totally new range of instrument mic systems for on stage recording of all your acoustic instruments. We have perfected an electret capsule that can take up to 140dB. At that level of performance the capsule will preserve the full harmonic envelope and warmth of your instrument. The SB21 Lanen Sax & Brass has been designed for alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas, French horns et all other brass instruments. We paid a lot of attention to how the mic should be attached to the instrument. We looked at existing mics, talked to musicians and put all the good ideas together. We then created a mic stem consisting of a fixed component and a flexible component. This offers greater adjustability and stability. The suspension system reduces the noise from the keys, and the clamp has been specially adapted for a tight fit to the bell of the instrument.  Clamp(s) and XLR adaptor are supplied for wired mic use (48V phantom power supply required). The mic can also convert to a UHF mic by connecting it to the Prodipe DSP/UHF Bodypack system (specially adapted for the Lanen 21 capsule impedance).

Features

  • Excellent natural sound
  • Very high acceptable sound pressure level (140 dB)

  • Mini XLR to XLR connector adaptor ensures that the mic lead is properly positioned on your instrument (48V phantom power supply required for wired connection)

Presentation by Ludovic Lanen

“Of all the components in a mic, the one that has to be infallible is the capsule. For the new Prodipe instrument mic range we have perfected an electret capsule here in France which can handle up to 140dB. And with this level of performance, our mic will preserve the full harmonic envelope and warmth of your instrument. I have called upon only the best musicians to test the mic systems: Patrick Bourgoin for the saxophone, Yvon Guillard for the trumpet, Claude Salmiéri for percussion of course, Clément Garcin for the guitar and ukulele, Jean-Claude Auclin for the cello and Gérard Prévost for the double bass. Our inspiration for developing the capsule has been the most reputed mics in the field. We have constantly compared the performance of our mics with DPA’s. The price of 21 series microphones may seem too small, but don’t let the price be the deciding factor. Buy the mic for its pro quality, because that’s our objective: to make pro quality available to everyone. And with this new range, Prodipe have done it again. They just can’t stop making their mark on the world of pro audio.” – Ludovic Lanen (Sound Engineer).

Ludovic Lanen has been a sound engineer for many years now. He has worked in the studio and live with Francis Cabrel, the National Jazz Orchestra, François Béranger, Patricia Kaas, Serge Lama, Claude Salmiéri, Bertand Lajudie, Paga Group, Michel Delpech, Francis Lalanne, Jean Félix Lalanne, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gilbert Montagné, Rose Laurens, Chimène Badi, Yves Duteil, Zachary Richard and Nolwenn Leroy.

Patrick Bourgoin has tested and uses Prodipe instrument mics

"Impossible is not French! This maxim is perfectly suited to Prodipe and to the experience I had while contributing to the development of the new Series 21 mics. Prodipe and their R&D team have set themselves a goal: to create a proximity mic that attaches to instruments like the saxophone, trumpet and trombone, but also to percussion instruments, and at a price which is affordable, at last. First there’s the capsule, the heart and soul of this mic. The characteristics are incredible, and the result: 140dB. When you think that the mic is 4 times cheaper than the best of the rest! And musicians can expect an exceptional sound quality. So why pay more? And then there’s the clip for easy attachment. Ludovic Lanen and I spent a considerable amount of time and energy devising a system that would be functional and flawless. I really enjoyed my experience with Prodipe. They use their know-how to systematically push the boundaries, but even more than that, they have the means to achieve their ambitions and the evidence is there for all to see. They just keep moving forward. It’s a Prodipe mic for me from now on. Thanks Prodipe. Excellent, exemplary and accessible." – Patrick Bourgoin (Saxophonist, Flautist).

Yvon Guillard uses the SB 21 mic on a daily basis

"I’ve been using Prodipe equipment for several years now because I know how much attention they pay to the manufacturing side. After testing the new SB21 instrument mic, I decided to have one of my own. It gives me the natural sound of my instrument; it gives me a capsule that can handle the high pressure levels associated with the trumpet and it gives me an ingenious clamp that is very effective for positioning the mic."

Yvon Guillard is one of those musicians whose career path has been forged by constant musical experimentation and the amazing experiences that this has offered. A classical training at the conservatoire, combined with a natural bent towards jazz and rythm and blues, has led him from Weidorje to Bernard Lavilliers, Véronique Sanson, Bill Deraime, Serge Gainsbourg, Magma, Youssou N’Dour, l’Affaire Louis Trio, les Silencers, Eva Marchal, Claude Salmiéri and Jacques Higelin. His musical experience has been enriched by his work on Luc Besson films with Eric Serra, as well as numerous TV programmes and adverts, but also by his work promoting electronic wind instruments for EVI AKAI. In parallel with this he has composed and recorded the jazz rock album ‘Pazapa’ with his brother Alain Guillard. This album fuses the musical influences of Yvon Guillars’s life into orginal sounds accompanied by Debbie Davis, Pip Pyle, Lydia and Sophia Domancich, Klaus Blasquiz and Eric Serra.
