Powered mixers
Mixer is the main component in any live sound reinforcement or studio recording system. Mixers possess different features depending on their intended use, but the basic function of all of them is combining and processing audio signals. You can use mixers in a wide variety of production environments, including live venues, recording studios, and radio or television broadcast studios, as well as film post-production facilities. A mixer's core use is to manage live or recorded sound. Mixers accept sources such as microphones and musical instruments, combine (mix) and process these sounds, and broadcast them to a recording device or an amplified sound system. Without mixers, modern live concerts and professionally recorded music wouldn't exist.
Powered mixers are perfect for DJs, local bands, and sound engineers who prefer to use a single-component system that is easy to set up. The reason is because powered mixers combine your amp, effects and cables together with the mixer into one portable and convenient unit. If you’re a solo player or in a small band, then you know how important a quick, painless setup can be. If you’re transporting your own public address system to the gig, the last thing you want to do is wrangle multiple components and have to assemble a full sound system every time you play. But a powered unit lets you show up with one audio mixer plus your speakers.
Two biggest decisions when choosing a powered mixer are how much power and how many channels you need. Both are somewhat dictated by the types of live sound scenarios in which you are likely to be working. Sizing your power requirements isn't just about how loud it is with the faders pushed all the way up. Power amps aren't designed to be constantly run full blast. You will need to figure in some overhead when deciding how many watts of power you need. Consider the size of the space where you're likely to be operating and the number of channels you will need. These two factors should put you in the ballpark.
Powered mixers also come with a variety of options in terms of on-board equalization and effects. Nearly every mixer comes with basic channel equalization. Many of the larger format, console style mixers can be equipped with fully sweepable mids, fully featured mains and monitor EQ sections. If you plan to incorporate stereo sources, such as laptop output or a turntable, make sure you choose a mixer with stereo inputs or mono/stereo switchable channel pairs. Some units even include a couple of DI channels. When you piece together your PA system, you have to make sure your PA speakers will work properly with your powered mixer. If you mismatch the ohms or wattage, you could damage your equipment.
