Connectors and adapters

For audio equipment and instruments to sound great, you need a quality connection. This is where cables and adapters come into play. There are many different types of cables and adapters for professional audio, including analog and digital connections. Connection is one of the most important parts of your studio or concert setup, and choosing the right cable can make a huge difference.

Analog connectors

There are many analog audio connectors, the most popular being XLR, TS, TRS (1/4" or 1/8"), RCA, and many types of speaker connectors such as speakON and Banana. Microphones and preamps typically use XLR cables. It has a 3-pin connector, is balanced, and provides a quality audio signal even at long lengths. TRS cables are most recognizable by their long plug, which has 1 or 2 black rings on it (1 ring for unbalanced cable/mono signals, 2 rings for balanced cable/stereo signals). Some units even have combo jacks that allow you to plug XLR or 1/4" TRS into a single jack. RCA cables usually have branching at both ends with a separate cord for the right and left audio signals. RCA is an unbalanced connection.

Digital connectors

Like analog, digital connectors are numerous and have connections such as S/PDIF, Optical TOSLINK, AES/EBU, MIDI, Word Clock, and FireWire/USB/Thunderbolt. Digital connections usually allow various digital devices to exchange data. To connect analog equipment to a digital signal, you'll need an audio interface or other AD/DA converter. Digital connections can be somewhat confusing because many of them look the same as analog connections. S/PDIF is a coaxial type of digital audio cable that mimics an analog RCA-type connection, but for digital audio signals. Optical cable or TOSLINK refers to a cable originally developed as ADAT for use in Alesis digital audio cassettes. It uses an optical red light beam as a signal connection through a wire and plug. AES and EBU cables may look like XLR cables. MIDI is the Musical Instrument Digital Interface, it doesn't play sound, it transmits musical data such as volume, pan, velocity, note and pitch for use with devices and instruments with a MIDI cable. Word Clock is the connection used to synchronize synchronization devices. FireWire and USB are common digital peripheral connections for use with PCs and Macs, sound recording devices, DAWs/workstations, digital instruments, and microphones.
