A direct box is a device designed to convert the output of unbalanced audio sources with high internal impedance (such as an electric guitar signal) into a balanced audio signal with low impedance (low impedance). It is commonly used in recording studios and concert venues. For connection, XLR connectors are usually used. The main function of this device is to coordinate the connection of unbalanced sources with balanced inputs, as well as the ability to change the input signal level within certain limits. This avoids the occurrence of equalizing current and helps to minimize distortion and noise when transmitting a signal from a high-resistance source over long distances through a cable.

Active and passive DI-Boxes

Because of this, an active DI is capable of amplifying the signal and is more complex and versatile than a passive DI.
