Care & Cleaning

Bowed string instrument care products

Wipe off your instrument and strings with a soft, clean lint-free cloth every time you finish playing to keep the varnish looking nice and prevent rosin dust buildup under the strings. The dust is very difficult to remove once it hardens. Always wash your hands before playing to avoid exposing the varnish to dirt or grease. It is not advisable to use any polishes for cleaning the instrument (including furniture polish). Areas of high contact with your skin may need extra cleaning. Only use natural cleaning products without any alcohol or solvent. Spray the cleaning solution on a soft cloth, not directly on the instrument! Instrument varnish is very delicate. Test a small area first to be certain the varnish is not damaged. Never use alcohol or solvent-based products. Alcohol, solvent, and hand sanitizer will damage the varnish on your instrument.

There are many types of cleaner on the market, and they differ primarily in the type and volume of the polish that they contain. Simply put, those without polish do not have the strength to remove a great deal of dirt, but they are kind to the instrument. In contrast, those with polish remove build-up, but may also harm the instrument. All cleaners are used basically in the same way. Using two cloths specially designed for stringed instruments, put a small amount of polish on one to remove the dirt, and use the other to wipe down the instrument after the dirt is removed. If the same cloth is used for both purposes, the instrument will become dirty again, so be sure to use two cloths. When using a cleaner that contains polish, shake the bottle well before using, and be careful not to wipe hard. However, cleaners that do contain polish will inevitably remove a very small amount of the varnish and so should not be used on old instruments.

The only place to keep your instrument or bow when you are not playing is in a closed case! Unprotected instruments could be knocked over or hit by falling objects. Do not expose your instrument to high heat or humidity or extreme cold, even when in its case. This includes keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, and not leaving it inside a closed car or in the trunk. Direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and liquids can all damage varnish and cause cracks in the wood.
