Using of lighting devices for different kinds of events raises a few questions to the organizers. Light control can be realized by means of manipulation or gaffer, or without his participation. First, this protocol has been designed to control dimmers, that's why there is a question of 512 dimmer channels. The dimmer each channel is responsible for adjusting the brightness.

This protocol is capable of supporting 512 channels. This protocol was first developed to control dimmers. In the dimmer, each channel is responsible for adjusting the brightness. In the DMX512 protocol, the brightness is encoded by 1 byte (8 bits). The DMX512 protocol allows for independent brightness control of up to 512 spotlights. At first glance, it may seem that this is enough. However, this is not entirely true: only one parameter (e.g. the brightness of a spotlight) can be controlled by one channel. Modern lights can have several control channels, for example, one channel for brightness control, another channel for color selection, a third channel for gobo selection, etc. Therefore, depending on the number of control channels in the device will depend on how many devices can be controlled. For example, if each device has 8 control channels, then 512/8 = 64 devices can be controlled, if the number of channels of each device is 16, then only 32 devices can be controlled! To increase the number of control channels, you can use additional ports, for example, to get 1024 channels, use 2 ports, each with 512 channels.

Data on the DMX512 protocol is carried out sequentially on a single cable. That is why the devices are connected to the control panel in sequence. DMX512 protocol is limited – each transmitter signal, ie the control panel, can not manage more than 32 devices in series. To make the management of more than 32 devices, you need a splitter DMX, with one input multiple outputs, each of which can hold up to 32 devices.
